How to Dance in Ohio

About the Film

Alexandra Shiva’s charming film focuses on a rite of passage that can prove daunting under even the best of circumstances: the spring formal. For her three young protagonists, however, the prospect of picking out a dress, finding a date, and figuring out what to talk about is downright anxiety-inducing. Marideth, Caroline, and Jessica attend sessions at a family counseling center that provides life and social skills training for high functioning people on the autism spectrum, and the formal is the culmination of the program. Taking a largely observational approach, Shiva allows viewers to experience the young women’s struggles and to celebrate their triumphs as they navigate all the steps leading to the dance.
