The Keeping RoomAbout the Film
In the male-dominated tradition of Civil War stories, The Keeping Room offers a striking—and strikingly violent—change of pace. At the tail end of the war in rural South Carolina, Augusta (Brit Marling), her sister Louise (Hailee Steinfeld), and their slave Mad (Muna Otaru) tend to their barren farm. When an accident drives Augusta to seek help in a nearby town, she is followed home by two murderous Yankee deserters (Sam Worthington and Kyle Soller), and this neo-Western morphs into a home-front siege thriller reminiscent of Straw Dogs, with the three women banding together to save themselves. Brit Marling’s compelling performance and Julia Hart’s Black List-topping script make this genre mash-up a significant addition to the Civil War canon.
