Chuck Norris vs Communism

About the Film

At the height of 1980s Cold War tensions, the forces of democracy found a most unlikely weapon behind the Iron Curtain: VHS tapes. Despite a ban on all things Western, ordinary Romanian citizens risked everything for a couple of hours of respite from their grim reality as they secretly gathered together to watch bootleg tapes of American action movies starring the likes of Chuck Norris, Sylvester Stallone, and Jean-Claude Van Damme, and in the process dreamed of a different way of life. Director Ilinca Calugareanu’s entertaining clandestine history reveals how a black market entrepreneur and a young female translator unexpectedly paved the way for the fall of Communism.
