Some Kind of SparkAbout the Film
Illustrating the transformative power not only of music, but of mentorship, Ben Niles’ film is an uplifting look at Juilliard’s Music Advancement Program for inner- city youth. Diverse kids between the ages of 8 and 14 are followed for two years as they devote weekends to developing musical proficiency, receiving hands-on instruction typically impossible as part of their regular schooling. Niles takes an observational approach, eschewing interviews and instead capturing these engaging youngsters in the moment as they confront a foreign setting, grow familiar with their instruments, and overcome stage fright. This is not an elite group of musical prodigies, and that’s the point—music education should be open to all children, enriching lives and instilling discipline and confidence.
