About the Film

NFF is delighted to showcase Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse’s satiric comedy, originally presented as a staged reading at the Festival in 2006! Putting a rebellious twist on a high school English assignment, 16-year-old Tatiana (Odeya Rush) strikes up a pen pal correspondence with Anton (Michael Caine), the notorious dictator of an island nation. When his people rise up and depose him, Anton escapes to the last place anyone would think to look: the suburban home Tatiana shares with her single mom, Darlene (Katie Holmes). As he plots his return to power while in exile, Anton takes on Tatiana as a protégée, helping her plan the overthrow of her high school’s ruling mean girls. What could possibly go wrong?

About the Filmmakers

Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse are married writer/directors. They have written screenplays for all major studios and have sold television pilots to Fox and ABC. Fresh out of college, they wrote and directed Lover Girl, an indie feature produced by Allison Anders which premiered in competition at the Toronto Film Festival and screened at the Berlin and Tokyo film festivals. Amatuer Night, based on their own experience when they first moved to Los Angeles, was released in theaters and on VOD in August 2016. Coup d’Etat is their most recent effort as writer-directors. The Hollywood Blacklisted script was finally realized as a film in 2017, starring Michael Caine, Katie Holmes, and Odeya Rush.As writers, Addario and Syracuse specialize in family comedy which enables them to direct the indie films they are passionate about. They wrote the Sony animated film Surf's Up as well as the Fox/Walden family comedy Parental Guidence, which stars Billy Crystal, Bette Midler and Marisa Tomei.Their adaptation of the book, The War With Grandpa, starring Robert Deniro and Christopher Walken, is in production for The Weinstein Company. Addario and Syracuse are currently writing a remake of Look Who's Talking for Sony, and a tightly-under-wraps feature for Fox Animation.
