GleasonAbout the Film
After former New Orleans Saints defensive back Steve Gleason receives a devastating diagnosis of ALS, or Lou Gehrig’s disease, he turns the camera on himself to provide his then-unborn son a sense of the father he may never know otherwise. These heartfelt video recordings grow increasingly evocative and demonstrate tenderness, vulnerability, and parental pride, even as ALS takes a physical and emotional toll on Steve and his steadfast wife, Michel. Still, the couple and their supporters refuse to give up hope. Not only do they use humor to cope with their ever-changing reality, but they charge ahead with inspirational optimism to found Team Gleason, which organizes adventure activities and advocates for the adoption of new medical technologies aimed at improving communication and quality of life for people living with ALS. Clay Tweel’s emotionally powerful portrait was an audience award winner at the SXSW Film Festival.
