About the Film

Struggling writer Billi (Awkwafina of Crazy Rich Asians) was raised in America, but has always remained close to her Nai Nai (Grandma) in China. When Billi learns that Nai Nai has only a few months to live, she heads back to China with her family to say goodbye. But because her dysfunctional relatives have decided not to reveal Nai Nai's prognosis to the elderly woman, they concoct a “good lie,” throwing together a family wedding as an excuse for the reunion. Based on an actual lie told by writer/director Lulu Wang's own family, The Farewell is a heartfelt, bittersweet, and funny celebration of cultural traditions and familial bonds.
