About the Film
More than five million people have been displaced by Syria’s ongoing civil war, yet only a tiny fraction of those refugees have been granted asylum in the United States—even before the fear-mongering of the current administration got underway. In her 2018 Sundance Audience Award-winning film, Alexandra Shiva (How to Dance in Ohio, NFF 2015) offers an empathetic and deeply human look at the experiences of four Syrian refugee families newly arrived in Baltimore who have just eight months to become self-sufficient before aid is cut off.
