About the Program

Noah Baumbach, this year’s honoree, has a talent for creating idiosyncratic, flawed, and utterly believable characters. Since debuting with Kicking and Screaming in 1995, Baumbach has brought urbane wit and sophisticated sensitivity to a series of whip-smart films. He writes familial and romantic relationships with cringe-worthy, unfiltered accuracy that has brought him tremendous acclaim. His screenplay for The Squid and the Whale, which he also directed, was nominated for an Oscar. Baumbach just wrapped filming his latest work, starring Scarlett Johansson, Laura Dern, and Adam Driver.

Selected Screenwriting Credits: Untitled Project (2018), The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected) (2017), Mistress America (2015), While We’re Young (2014), Frances Ha (2012), Greenberg (2010), Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009), Margot at the Wedding (2007), The Squid and the Whale (2005), The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004), Kicking and Screaming (1995)

Presented by BEN STILLER
Ben Stiller is a producer, director, writer, and actor. Stiller’s acting credits with honoree Noah Baumbach include Greenberg, While We’re Young, and The Meyerowitz Stories (New and Selected). Stiller has been on the NFF Board of Directors since the Festival’s inception.

Director Morgan Neville not only shines a spotlight on unsung cultural heroes, but does so with impeccable timing. Neville won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and a Grammy for 20 Feet from Stardom, which opened NFF 2013. In Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, about unlikely television star Fred Rogers, Neville employs his trademark empathy to paint an intimate portrait of an American icon who provided much-needed counterbalance in the often abrasive world of television. Neville adeptly humanizes larger-than-life subjects and elevates humble people like Rogers to bring them long overdue recognition. We’re pleased to offer him some recognition ourselves and to honor him for his outstanding body of work.

Andrew Heckler’s Burden is a true passion project. It took 20 years for the writer/director to bring the story of a former Klansman in search of redemption to the screen. The resulting film is not only topical, but impactful. It premiered at this year’s Sundance Film Festival, where it won a coveted Audience Award. With the New Voices in Screenwriting Award, we recognize both Heckler’s talent for crafting believable dialogue with complex characters, and his impressive dedication and perseverance.

Garrett Hedlund stars as the title character in Burden. Last year, Hedlund starred in Netflix’s award-winning Mudbound, directed by Dee Rees. He also appeared in Steven Soderbergh’s Mosaic. Hedlund just wrapped the J.C. Chandor adventure film Triple Frontier, in which he co-stars with Ben Affleck, Charlie Hunnam, Oscar Isaac, and Pedro Pascal.
