About the Film
Debra Granik (Winter’s Bone, NFF 2010) returns to the Festival with this compassionate story of a family on society’s margins. For several years, Will (Ben Foster) and his daughter, Tom (Thomasin Harcourt McKenzie), have avoided contact with the outside world except when absolutely necessary. Secretly living off the grid in a nature preserve near Portland, Oregon has allowed Will to cope with his PTSD. When Will’s momentary carelessness leads to their discovery by authorities, the pair’s idyllic existence is forever changed, and they are forced to confront conflicting desires for their futures.
